Easy Methods to Cook Chicken Breasts

Cooked chicken breasts are a super versatile item to have in your fridge –whether you need it for chicken salad, chicken enchilada casserole or chicken pot pie. Whether you need chicken in a hurry or have time to do it low and slow, I’ve got the perfect easy strategies for cooking chicken without much fuss.

Seasoned simply with salt, pepper and garlic salt and kept moist with a bit of water, these methods are guaranteed to produce perfectly cooked, juicy chicken that can be sliced for salads or shred easily with a fork. Here’s how…

Instant Pot

The fastest, easiest method is to cook them in an Instant Pot or pressure cooker. Simply season your chicken breasts, drop them into the pot, add some water and seal the lid. Set it to high pressure for 13 minutes (or use the “Poultry” button if your cooker has one) and walk away. When the cook cycle ends, let the pressure release naturally and voila! Perfectly cooked chicken in about 30 minutes.

Slow Cooker

You don’t have an Instant Pot or pressure cooker? Seriously, you should. But if you don’t, you can still use this technique in the slow cooker. Season your chicken the exact same way, add the water cover the pot and let it cook. 6-8 hours on low (perfect if you want to do this overnight and start a recipe in the morning) or 3-4 hours on high.

Either way the results are the same. These are two Perfect, Easy Methods to Cook Chicken Breasts.

Description

Easy Methods to Cook Chicken Breasts in the slow cooker or instant pot.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2–2.5 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth or water

Instructions

  1. Place chicken in your Instant Pot or slow cooker.
  2. Season both sides of chicken with garlic powder, salt and pepper.
  3. Pour in chicken broth or water.
  4. Secure lid. If using an Instant Pot, making sure your valve is set to sealing.
    • If using an Instant Pot or pressure cooker, press the “Poultry” button or set the pot to High Pressure for 13 minutes. Once the cook cycle finishes, wait for Pot to depressurize on it’s own, known as natural release.
    • If using a slow cooker, cook chicken with lid secure for 3-4 hours on high or 6-8 hours on low.
  5. Once chicken is cooked, on a cutting board and shred with 2 forks, OR slice chicken breast.

Notes

Chicken can be used as-is, added to recipes or frozen in an airtight container for up to 3 months.
