The Best Stuffed Overnight French Toast

When it comes to weekend entertaining, I am a fan of the brunch. Its always fun to invite a group of friends over for a few hours of coffee-and-pastry-fueled fun and still have time to clean up the house before bedtime. Its even better when you can make most of the meal in advance and this French toast bake may be the most decadent make-ahead brunch recipe ever.

Make-Ahead Ease

Overnight French toast has always been one of my favorite make-ahead brunch options because it combines the sweet decadence of French toast with make-ahead convenience. The morning of your brunch, simply pull the casserole out of the fridge and let it come to room temp and stick it in the oven. Within an hour you’ve got a golden, rich breakfast creation that’s sure to elicit oohs and ahhs.

Stuffed with Goodness

This overnight French toast recipe would be pretty amazing made just with the bread and custard mixture, but to make it extra decadent I’ve transformed this into a Stuffed Overnight French Toast — adding a smear of rich and delicious strawberry cream cheese to each piece of brioche before tucking it into the pan.

I’ve used a similar method before in my Cream Cheese and Blueberry Brioche French Toast, which is also amazing, but I’m rather partial to this version which combines the cream cheese with jam for a sweet and smooth strawberry surprise in every bite.

Berries are Best

This Stuffed Overnight French Toast is rich and delicious on its own, but made even better when topped with fresh, juicy berries. The bright, fresh, slightly-tart berries cut through the richness of the dish, creating the perfect bite. Finish it with a drizzle of syrup if you’d like, or just enjoy on its own.

Choose Your Vessel

You’ll notice that I prepared my Stuffed Overnight French Toast in a shallow cast iron casserole but you could just as easily put this in a standard 13×9″ oven safe casserole. I chose to prepare this in something pretty since this one will go straight from the oven to the table, but truthfully, the dish is so beautiful, your guests will surely love it no matter what sort of dish you use.

Description

This decadent Strawberry Cream Stuffed French Toast combines thick slices of brioche with rich strawberry cream cheese. Make the night before and bake in the morning.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup strawberry jam
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 loaf Brioche or Challah bread, in 1-inch thick slices
  • 6 large Eggs
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 1/3 cup Heavy Cream
  • 1/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1 Tablespoon Vanilla Extract
  • 1/4 cup + 2 teaspoons granulated sugar, divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 lb. fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • Optional Garnishes: confectioner’s sugar, syrup

Instructions

  1. Grease a shallow 30 cm round or oven-safe 9×11″ casserole dish.
  2. In a small bowl, mix together cream cheese and strawberry jam until well-combined and smooth. Spread about 1 tablespoon of the cream cheese mixture on each piece of bread. Gently fold each sliced in half and tuck into the casserole dish.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, orange juice, vanilla extract, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, and salt.
  4. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the top of the bread. Cover the casserole dish with a tight fitting lid or foil and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or overnight (the longer the French toast sits, the more evenly the custard will absorb into the bread).
  5. When preparing to serve, preheat oven to 350 F. Remove casserole dish from refrigerator at least 30 minutes before baking. Uncover and bake overnight French Toast for 35-45 minutes, or until top is golden brown.
  6. While the French toast is baking, toss strawberries with 2 teaspoons granulated sugar (or to taste).
  7. When French toast is finished baking, top with fresh berries and dust with confectioner’s sugar before serving.
