It’s almost that time of year again! Halloween Costume time! Even though my sewing and crafting skills can be considered rudimentary at best, I absolute love creating handmade costumes for my kiddos each year (and occasionally for our French bulldog Zoey as well). Around this time each year we start brainstorming ideas and searching online for how-tos. They love helping me come up with their theme and I love bringing it to life for them.
Although I haven’t always done detailed tutorials (usually, I’m flying by the seat of my pants and my hot glue gun while I’m working), I do provide photos and a summary of how I made each one and links (if available) to more detailed step-by-steps. Lets get started.

Dragons Love Tacos Costumes:
The most recent and far and away my favorite costumes ever! This idea was 100 percent kid-generated, based on one of their favorite books, Dragons Love Tacos. These were pretty easy to make…the dragon took a bit more work than the taco but both turned out SO CUTE. Even made one for Zoey. Get more details here.
Vintage Race Car Driver:
Inspired by actor and race car driver Steve McQueen, this costume is easy to make and super warm thanks to the white fleece pajama racing suit. The hat was purchased from Amazon and the car is little more than a few cardboard boxes glued together and spray painted. Max loved this costume!
Feathery Flamingo and Precious Parrot:
I made Lilly’s flamingo costume using a too-small second hand “princess dress” fastened with three pink feather boas at intervals to create a fluffy, flamingo body. A felt head and neck completed the look. She ADORED this one.
Max’s Parrot costume is a warm cosy hooded sweatshirt with felt feathers and a beak. I made this one in about an hour and it was SOOOOO cute.
Lilly in the Garden:
Lilly’s felt flower petal collar with inspired by a costume idea from Martha Stewart Living. I layered her felt collar over an orange ruffled dress and green and yellow striped tights. An orange fall jacket completed the look. To make it a family costume, I dressed as a gardener, Jon as a bee keeper, Zoey wore a bee costume and filled our wagon with gardening tools before we headed to parties and trick or treating.
Lightning Lilly:
This was the first year that Lilly had an opinion about her costume and we had great fun making this together. She told me she wanted to be a super hero like Super Grover from Sesame Street. We decided together to make her an original hero and she picked the colors. The cape required some minor sewing but the rest was all done with felt and existing clothing.
Vintage Gumball Machine:
This is such a fun new-sew costume that uses really easy-to-find clothing items and glued on pompoms.
Cupcake and Candy Corn:
This cupcake might be my all-time favorite costume of Lillian’s. That cupcake wrapper is an old lamp shade with washing tape down the sides and Duct Tape straps to hold it on. I added about 2 yards of satiny fabric, wound around her shoulders, for the icing and hot-glued on some foam confetti for sprinkles. The candle on top is made from felt and a toilet paper tube attached to a headband. Max’s candy corn sleep sack sewed up in just a few minutes and we used it all through the fall as an extra layer of warmth.
We haven’t even started discussing costumes for this year, so who knows what the next few months could bring. Meanwhile, I hope theses 10 Adorably Easy DIY Halloween Costume Ideas offered some spooktacular inspiration.
