So, let’s say, hypothetically, that you are vaguely aware that Mother’s Day is approaching but haven’t given much thought to gifts. And then one day you glance at the calendar and are suddenly hyper aware that you have just three days to figure out how to honor the amazing moms in your lives with something sweet and handmade and special.
Well fear not. I’ve got you covered. I may or may not have had a similar freak out moment just yesterday. So I did what any semi-crafty and frugal mom would do: I took a trip to the dollar store. $12 later I walked out with everything the kids and I would need to make these sweet little DIY Decoupage Flameless Candles.
That gorgeous pattern on the candle? Yeah, its a cocktail napkin glued on with Modge Podge.
This is quite possibly the sweetest and easiest craft that the kids and I have ever done.
To make a DIY DECOUPAGE FLAMELESS CANDLE You’ll Need:
- A plain white flameless candle
- A foam paint brush
- Modge Podge glue
- A cocktail napkin, unfolded and peeled apart to single-ply
- My FREE PRINTABLE Gift Tag Label
- Scotch Tape
So to make these babies, I sat both kids at the table. Handed them a flameless candle, then gave them each a foam paintbrush and a paper plate filled with Modge Podge glue. I had them paint a thin layer of glue over the entire outside of the candle. We found the best way to do this was to flip the candle over and hold onto it by the “wick” in the hollow top part.
While they painted on the glue, I unfolded a paper cocktail napkin and carefully removed the inner layer of paper, leaving a single layer of decorative paper. I laid the napkin out on the table. As soon as the Modge Podge layer is on, you lay the candle down on a napkin, leaving about a 1/4 inch of overhang. Carefully wrap the napkin around the candle. Its okay if there are a few wrinkles. Next, carefully add a second layer of Modge Podge to completely seal the napkin onto the candle.
Add a thin layer of Modge Podge around the bottom edge of the candle and fold the border around the end for a clean look. Our napkins had a lot of excess at the top, so we just let that part hang loose until the bottom part dried. Once the candle is completely dry (only took a couple of hours), we trimmed the extra napkin from the top. The kids are SO proud and excited to share these with their grandmas! To give the whole project an extra finished look, I created a custom printable label that we affixed to the front of each candle with Scotch tape.
Its a little hard to read in the photo, but in person, the label says “You Light Up Our Lives!” and its PERFECT.
I love everything about this little DIY Decoupage Flameless Candle project. I especially love that the candles are flameless since we’re giving one of them to my 98-year old grandma who we no longer trust with real candles. She’s going to love having this little beauty flickering on her bedside table.
Beyond Mother’s Day, I think this would be an ideal gift for teachers or even used as a Wedding Shower Favor since they’re so inexpensive to make (seriously, all-in, its like $1.50 per candle).
