Easy DIY Halloween Costume Idea: Vintage Gumball Machine

October 31, 2016 By Homemaker's Habitat

Some blog posts and television appearances are sponsored by featured companies. All opinions stated are my own.

Lillian’s Halloween costume also has a bit of a vintage spin. This year, my sweet girl chose to be a sweet treat — a vintage gumball machine! This costume was so easy and inexpensive to create and she absolutely loved helping me with the design.

Now that she’s a “big girl” she makes most of her own costume decisions. Lucky for me, she was actually excited about the idea of making her costume. We had so much fun brainstorming potential costume ideas, then working together to bring her vision to life.

Even better, we were able to create her gum ball machine outfit inexpensively mostly using items we already had in the house. The only items we purchased were the red beret for the “top” of the machine, a long sleeved white shirt, and two bags of craft pompoms. She already had a red tutu that we used for the “base” of the machine, paired with silver leggings and boots for the “post”.

To create the gum ball pattern on the shirt, I used a piece of chalk to trace the outline of a large paper plate onto the shirt. Then we dipped each pompom in fabric glue before placing them on the shirt. I did the border pompoms and Lillian filled in the middle. Our design required exactly two large bags of craft pompoms to fill. To complete the look, I covered a piece of cardboard with aluminum foil and added “25 cents” in permanent marker and safety pinned the sign to her tutu.

Lillian is 100 percent THRILLED with the way her costume turned out and I think she is incredibly proud that she did much of the work herself. I love that this is something we were able to create together. Hopefully this is a Halloween tradition that will continue for many fun years to come.

Wishing everyone a truly safe and Happy Halloween tonight!
