Smoothie Oat-takes

JiT and I just finished a photo shoot for a food photography project we undertook. It was a pretty straightforward assignment — photographing a fruit and oatmeal smoothie recipe for a certain brand of oats (you’d recognize the box).

Before we received their recipe I’d not really heard of putting oats in a smoothie, but it must be a new “thing” because I’ve since seen that Naked Juice just came out with a line of oat-infused smoothies. I know it sounds strange but they’re pretty good. The oats puree down pretty well and end up adding a certain amount of thickness…almost like a shake.

The recipe we shot for this project was pretty simple…oats, fruit and yogurt. It was tasty and Lillian really enjoyed it, so I’ve since been experimenting with other types of fruits and ingredients. Once I know if/when the official recipe is published online, I’ll be sure to share a link, but in the meantime, our favorite recipe so far is below:

Fruit & Oat Breakfast Smoothie
Serves 2

1/2 cup frozen strawberries
1/2 cup blueberries (frozen or fresh)
1/2 cup low fat plain yogurt
1 cup skim or lowfat milk
2/3 cup Old Fashioned Oats (preferably Quaker, a client)
1 Tablespoon honey
dash of ground cinnamon to taste

Combine everything in a blender and puree until smooth. If necessary, stop briefly to scrape any oats from the sides. I noticed that if you wait a few minutes before serving the oats seem to absorb some of the liquid and take on a smoother/thicker consistency. Serve in tall glasses with a straw.
