Now that I have the time to do it, I’ve been trying to prepare for our new arrival. Afterall, the time keeps slipping by — I’m already 19 weeks (that’s almost 5 months in non-prego language) along….that’s more than half-way baked!! So in addition to reading pregnancy books, I picked up a copy of Dr. Spock to start preparing for how I might actually care for this child. So far I’ve learned that babies need a lot of help to figure out how and when to sleep. They also need a lot of help figuring out how and when to eat….once the parents decide how and what to feed them. There seem to be a lot of variables!
Speaking of variables….I’ve also started a registry. There isn’t much on it right now because each item seems to require an endless amount of research. We started with the stroller — several friends have models from Baby Jogger that seem to get high marks, so we went with one of those. Then on to a car seat….I won’t even go into the details on the research THAT entailed!
Now I’m on to diapering, which seems to be causing the biggest headache of all so far. Since I’m planning to stay at home with the baby for at least the first year, I’ve been thinking reusable cloth diapers might be a worthwhile endeavor. Afterall, they’re better for the environment and after the initial up-front investment, you don’t have to spend nearly as much. So, with that decision made, I thought the rest would be easy. NOT SO!
It turns out there are an endless array of reusable cloth diapers available. Different brands, different models, different sizes. Incidentally, all of them have insanely cute names that further complicate any rational decision-making: Fuzzibunz, bumGenius, Bumkins. Then there are hybrid diapers with throw-away inserts but reusable outer covers. Further complicating matters, most of the “big box” and national baby retailers only carry a few types of these reusable diapers, and some of the best-rated ones are only available through obscure boutique stores, so it would be difficult to add them to a registry. So, at this point I’m a little bit stumped on how to proceed. I guess that’s why God gives us 9 months to prepare.
Would love advice from experienced parents out there. Do you use reusable diapers or disposables? How did you decide which brand, no matter what type you use?
