Last week, one of my colleagues and a fellow blogger, lent me a book that I’d been wanting to read. On Friday night at 11pm, I decided to take a quick peek at the first chapter before I went to sleep…..I finally put the book down after I’d read the last page at 8:30am on Saturday. Yep…9 and a half hours STRAIGHT through the night.
You’ve probably already heard of (or read) the book and its sequels…its called Twilight and its a vampire book…sort of similar to the Harry Potter series in that it was originally penned for teenagers and stays relatively PG-13 in content. I loved it (if that wasn’t obvious based on my overzealous reading schedule). JiT thought it was hilarious that I was still awake and reading when he left for golf at 7 a.m. but he wasn’t terribly surprised once he found out the subject matter….he knows I like vampire books. Really, I like any book with fantasy or sci-fi themes.
Since the focus of this blog sticks almost always to things like cupcakes, dinners, entertaining and gifts, it occurred to me that some of you might be a little surprized to learn about a few of my other interests. So, while this isn’t a meme or anything formal…and its certainly a self-indulgent post (forgive)…I thought I’d share a few possible surprises…
Books: As noted, I love anything with a fantasy or sci-fi theme. Especially things with dark undertones. Vampires are obviously a favorite (in addition to Twilight, I’ve read The Historian twice and have been planning for quite some time to read Bram Stoker’s Dracula later this fall). Now, this may be revealing too much, but I’ve also read The Hobbit and Lord of The Rings four times each. I should note that despite my sometimes fanatical reading styles, I’m not one of those folks who dresses up for movie premiers or attends conventions or anything. I just like to get lost in the stories.
Movies/TV: Staying true to theme, again sci-fi, fantasy and horror are favorites (not to mention bad-ass summer blockbusters…Transformers, Die Hard). In the winter, JiT and I wait patiently for the first weekend snowstorm…then we cosy up with something comforting for supper and do a winter-themed movie marathon. Our plan for this winter: The Shining, 30 Days of Night, and Alien vs. Predator. And I love Star Wars (but not Star Trek). In terms of TV, I insist that we tivo X-Files reruns religiously…if I’ve had a bad day, thats how JiT calms me down. I’m also a big fan of the new series Fringe on Fox, and True Blood on HBO.
Music: This might be the most odd part. For the most part, my music taste is relatively normal…a little Justin Timberlake, John Mayer, some David Grey, the odd indie rocker (Imogen Heap). I’m also a huge fan of old-school blues and 70s rock like Led Zeppelin, an appreciation learned mainly from my father. But the truly odd part is my love of really hard rock and metal. Especially when I’m cleaning the house or trying to zone out….I love listening to bands like Tool, A Perfect Circle, Mudvayne, 30 Seconds to Mars and Atreyu. I have no idea where this comes from….but if you ever borrow my iPod, be warned!
Please understand, I still read my share of chick books (Something Borrowed), love plenty of funny/happy/drama movies, and definitely listen to my fare share of Britney Spears hits. Anyway, apologies for the over-sharing. Do you guys have any interests that others might be surprised by?
Oh, as for the picture of the truck, its something that JiT snapped a few months ago when we were in Wisconsin. It really doesn’t have any bearing on the post except that I really like it…although if you’ve read Twilight I’m sure you can see why it came to mind.
This week….post on homemade (freakishly easy!) apple dumplings…
